  1. Region of SW USSR, in the Caucasus, on the
  2. border of the republic of Georgia. It is
  3. inhabited by the Ossets, who speak the
  4. Iranian language Ossetic, and who were
  5. conquered by the Russians in 1802. Some live
  6. in the North Ossetian autonomous republic of
  7. the SW USSR; area 8,000 sq km/3,088 sq mi;
  8. population (1985) 613,000; capital
  9. Ordzhonikidze. The rest live in the South
  10. Ossetian autonomous region of the Georgian
  11. republic, population (1984) 98,000; capital
  12. Tshkinvali. The region has been the scene of
  13. Osset-Georgian inter-ethnic conflict from
  14. 1989. The Ossets have demanded that South
  15. Ossetia be upgraded to an autonomous republic
  16. as a preliminary to reunification with North
  17. Ossetia.
